Whether you’ve gained them by being mentioned in one of Kim Kardashian’s tweets, grew them naturally or bought them from us, if you’re on Twitter you will likely have some followers. No matter how many followers you might have, there’s probably one thing you may not have considered: how much those little digital connections are worth to you.

And no, I’m not talking about on a sentimental emotional level, I’m talking about how much they could be worth to you in cold hard simoleans. Why would you want to know this? Well, there are loads of people who will buy Twitter accounts which are proven to convert sales, or you may just want to know because you’re a pedantic, money-hungry accountant-type who needs to know how everything in your experience is worth.

Whatever the reason, in this post we’re going to take an in-depth look at how much your Twitter followers could be worth, and what that could mean to you.

But before we do, let’s look at the people on Twitter and how you probably fit in the grand scheme of things.

There are three main types of people on Twitter: Firstly, you have Celebrities looking to boost their egos in a war to become one of the most-followed people on the site. Secondly, you have an average human Internet-user who just uses the site to tell their close circle of friends when they’re taking a dump (I like to call these the ‘Normals’). And if you can’t fit into one of those categories, you’re simply using Twitter as a marketing medium to make money from.

And in case you haven’t yet figured out from the vast amount of spam and promotional messages floating around the site like a digital version of Rosie O’Donnell in a bath of chunky soup, marketers form probably the dominant category of people on the site. And if you’re reading this post on a marketing blog, you are either a ‘net-tard who accidentally found this site while looking for pornography, or you belong to this group as well.

As a marketer, you’ll know that a Twitter account is effectively like having a mailing list to connect with your clients and friends and there are various factors which will sway how profitable your list will be to you. For example, if your entire list was gained as a result of giving away a freebie, the people on it won’t be as likely to buy something from you as a list of people who are previous clients who have already bought your services.

It’s these variables which should be taken into account when estimating the value of your Twitter account and I’ve listed some of the most common below:

1. Acquisition

How did you gain your Twitter followers? If they were gained through natural traffic to your Twitter page by people interested in you and what you have to say, sent from your blog or website, or purchased from uSocial in targeted packages, then chances are they’ll be worth not only a little, but probably a good deal as these are all methods which are recommended when gaining followers. However, if you’ve used an automated script to gain followers, relied on follow-backs from randomly following others or simply gained them en masse by spamming Twitter, they’re likely worth about as much as a handful of used toilet paper.

2. Targeting

Are your followers simply any soul you could get so you enjoy the outcome of an inflated ego when you looked at your follower numbers? If that’s the case, then they’re probably not worth much to you. On the other hand, if your fans on Twitter are people who are genuinely interested in what you’re saying, the industry or interest group you’re in, or your geographic location, then they’ll be worth their weight in myrrh-coated saffron. And of course, to easily increase your targeted followers, you can always buy them in packages from 1,000 and up from us.

3. Relationship

If you gained the vast majority of your followers simply because you give out a free report if they follow you, then there’s a good chance most of them will avoid your tweets like a bacteria-laden carcass in the future. To really strike Twitter gold, the best followers come from those people who have done business with you before, regularly read your material or who you know personally. If you can even accrue a few hundred followers like this, you’ll perform many times better than people who have lists of five and six figures of people they have no business knowing.

4. Numbers

While a lot of people say the number of followers you have is the be-all and end-all, it’s not always the case. The three points I’ve mentioned until now are by far more important when considering the worth of your followers, but after you’ve tackled them to the best of your abilities, the number of followers you have does come into it. Just make sure you’re not riding the value of your followers on this alone because if you consider only numbers and not the overall quality of your followers, you may find yourself rather disappointed when it comes to promoting a product or service to them.

Take these points into consideration when attempting to decide how much your followers are each worth to you, though you can never truly know the value of your Twitter account and the people following you until you spend a good month marketing to them and letting the figures speak for themselves.

The best way of doing this is to send maybe 1-2 promotional messages to your followers every day for a month and tracking how many sales this results in. Divide the amount earned by your number of followers and you’ll have a figure which will be the average value of each follower on your list.

And if you’re any kind of marketer you’ll know that the figures always speak for themselves!

I don’t like doing things in the *normal* way, which I why I took up the offer when one of my colleagues told me I should write about why people shouldn’t buy Twitter followers with us. So, let’s shake things up a little and take a look at why you shouldn’t do this (even though there are a lot of reasons you should).

1. You’re A Celebrity

We can’t all be Britney Spears (Though after her many falls from grace, I doubt there are many people who would want to be her at the moment anyway) and thus, have an instantly-massive following on Twitter.

Let’s face it, there are millions of teenage suburban girls who like minute-by-minute updates as to when their favourite celebrities are clipping their fingernails, though the fact is that they don’t want the same updates from you. So unless you’re a massive celebrity like of the final ten Idol contestants(*choke*), a reality TV star or one of Tom Cruise’s supposedly-famous offspring, then you may need to take the plunge and invest in some Twitter followers.

Either that, or you can try and get famous in the same way the kids from Jersey Shore did and simply act like orange morons on TV for a few weeks and wait for the cash to roll in.

2. You Have No Idea What ‘A Twitter’ Is

You can almost hear it, can’t you? The cries of an elderly family-member something like; “Back in my day we didn’t need all this newfangled mumbo-jumbo. A nice comfy chair in front of the ol’ wireless was all the technology we needed!”

Look, Gran: times change. If things always stayed the same then we’d still all have slaves, would burn people who practiced homeopathic medicine as witches and we’d still be thinking that the sun revolved around the Earth. Would you prefer that? Or would you prefer trying to plug your kidney dialysis machine into a tree and finding out that in order to produce electricity, technology needs to advance.

Ahem…anyway, if you don’t know what Twitter is or have no intention of using it, then maybe you won’t need to buy followers.

3. You’re Just Using Twitter To Connect With Friends

If you don’t have what most people would call a real life and are a pasty-skinned, 37-year-old virgin who still lives in their parent’s basement and plays World Of Warcraft almost every waking minute, then this probably won’t be for you my friend.

Twitter was envisioned as a means simply to keep up to date with friends (or as a cash-cow eventually to be sold to Google…whichever way you want to look at it) and if that’s all that you use it for, you won’t need to take the plunge and invest in any paid-follower services like uSocial’s. That is, unless you’re a totally ego-driven sociopath who needs the whole world to know every time you’ve plucked a particularly-juicy nasal hair. In that case, then go ahead.

As we all know, Twitter is being heavily used by businesses these days to promote their services. But if you don’t fit into that category, then you should be happy tweeting to the nine followers you have which are mostly from the cat appreciation club you’re a member of.

4. You Are Promoting An Account Relating To Internet Marketing

Haven’t people figured this one out yet? It seems to me that every day about seventy-five thousand Twitter accounts are set up every day with the sole purpose of promoting IM products, mostly on Clickbank.

Pardon my colourful language, but for fuck’s sake, trying to make a buck selling products in probably the most saturated niche on the planet — especially as the first product you’re promoting — is utterly stupid in my own humble opinion. There are literally millions of people trying to do the same thing and if you wanna fight over the scraps with them like a pack of rabid dogs with a sheep carcass, then go ahead. But don’t mind me when I say you’re are likely going to fail miserably.

If it’s your intention to buy targeted Twitter followers with the intention of promoting something to them then that’s fine, just do some research and choose a niche that not many people are trying to fill at the time. It may take you a few days to find even one niche worth filling, however that time is well worth spent on that then doing something which won’t pay you at all.

So if you’re still thinking about promoting IM products on Twitter after what I’ve said here, please lean closer towards the screen so I can slap you.

5. You’re Intent On Spamming Twitter

If you’ve spent any kind of time on Twitter, you’ll know that the site is literally filled with spam. While I have to admit that the site has come forward in leaps and bounds when it comes to combating spam since it started, the simple fact is that they won’t ever be able to stop it in its entirety.

And just like my point above, spamming Twitter in the attempt to make money is about as silly as promoting IM products and unless you have some serious scripting, hardware and software skills to really spam the hell out of Twitter on an immense scale — as well as a large and abundant bankroll of cash behind you — you won’t ever succeed at doing it properly and profiting. If your intention is to buy followers and then simply spam the hell out of them with some crappy product, you’re better off saving your money.

Better still, take the cash and go and buy a bucket of KFC original recipe. You’ll feel just as dirty after you eat it all, but at least you’ve done something to nourish yourself. Spamming won’t achieve the same result.

6. You Don’t Answer Your Follower’s Messages

If you get an @reply from someone on Twitter, you should reply to them. If you think that Twitter Marketing is going to work if you’re going to shun those who have taken the time to follow and message you, then you’ll surely be a bigger failure than when Australia’s Big Brother tried to revive ratings by putting Jackie-O and Kyle Sandilands on as hosts.

Social media is just that: social. People aren’t going to buy anything you’re trying to sell if you do nothing but promote, promote, promote and ignore genuine questions, inquiries and comments from your followers. That is, unless you’re a celebrity and ignore all your fans by default.

If you’re not going to be social, then there is no point spending your hard-earned and buy followers on Twitter.

7. You’re A Silly-Head.

If you don’t fit into any of the previous categories and are actually a business, organisation, or some other operation who is looking to capitalise on the Twitter-boom and use this somewhat-pointless site for marketing and you don’t buy Twitter followers, then you sir (or madam) are a bit of a fool.

The fact is there is no faster way of getting quality and targeted followers to your account than by purchasing them. If you truly want to profit fast and get ahead of your competition by sending tweet after tweet to those who have actually opted-in to following you, you should take out your credit card and and fork out a few wing-wangs on followers. Otherwise, you may be waiting for months, or even years, to get a large number of followers naturally.

Simple, right?

We’re extremely excited to announce that as of today we’ve served over 250,000 followers to our clients — yes, that’s over a quarter of a million so far — on their accounts.
As more and more people pile onto the Twitter bandwagon each and every day, the site is experiencing a massive growth in not only those using the site to keep in touch with friends and family, but those who want to use the site expressly for marketing purposes.

It’s a common sight these days for anyone with a Twitter account to be bombarded with links to affiliate products, services or whatever else. And while there are a select handful of people on the site marketing the right way, it seems that for the most part, spammers are having a field day on the site.

But according to web traffic company uSocial.net, there is money to be made on Twitter whether someone is spamming or not.

“There are new scripts being created almost on a daily basis to simply allow people to follow thousands of people at a time,” said uSocial CEO Leon Hill. “In many cases we’ve seen brand new accounts grow to over 1,500 followers in a day. While they generally get suspended in a very short time, in the time they’re active they market like crazy to their followers.”

uSocial say that people are using these tactics repeatedly in order to conduct spam-marketing campaigns and in some cases can attain tens of thousands of followers in a day over several accounts.

And they say that despite Twitter’s best efforts to contain it, things are not slowing down.

“Twitter has software in place which detects strange activity and suspends accounts based on this,” said Hill. “While it’s excellent for weeding out spammers, it can sometimes take days for the software to pick it up so these spammers usually have free reign for a while on each account.”

“Most of them have several accounts running simultaneously and as soon as one is shut down they simply open another and repeat. In the great scheme of things, Twitter really isn’t stopping anything at the moment.”

But uSocial say there is a light at the end of the tunnel in that most people are savvy not to take notice of spam accounts that send out hundreds of URL tweets in the space of minutes.

“Most people just ignore it so a lot of it isn’t doing much harm apart from the annoyance of having this stuff come up on your screen for a few days until the account is closed.” Continued Hill.

And speaking of marketing on Twitter, uSocial recently launched a new set of services based around the site which include the ability for users to buy followers. But what is the company’s stance on that? Should this be considered spam?

“Many people have suggested that buying Twitter followers is spam, however we simply manage other’s accounts in order to get them the greatest amount of followers possible in a short amount of time,” said Hill. “We have no control of the content someone places on their account so if they decide to use it for spamming, it’s their choice.”

“Though if they do, it’s almost a certainty their account will be closed by Twitter’s bots quite quickly.” Finished Hill.

The new services were launched around two weeks ago and can be found by going to http://usocial.net/twitter_marketing or for more information the company can be contacted via the form on their website.

But it seems as far as the Twitter spammers are concerned that uSocial have spoken about, most people believe they won’t be going away any time soon.
